Project Description:

Midlands Mechanical was selected as a key mechanical contractor for the construction of the Valent BioSciences fermentation campus in Osage, Iowa. The site includes two major buildings — a Central Utility Building and a Main Fermentation Building — along with a full lab space and support areas. Our work was executed in two phases, starting with mechanical infrastructure and utilities, followed by the integration of those systems into the fermentation and production processes.

This site produces microbial-based agricultural and public health products, requiring high-purity systems, extensive utility coordination, and precision mechanical execution. From large-scale chilled water systems to raw material piping and clean utility support, this job involved complex mechanical layout, coordination, and system tie-ins across a high-performance bio-manufacturing environment.

  • Central Utility Building – 28,000 square feet
  • Main Fermentation Building – approximately 110,000 square feet
  • Laboratory – 28,000 square feet

Scope of Work & Responsibilities

Our work at Valent BioSciences included:

  • Full mechanical piping installation for the Central Utility Building
  • Process tie-ins and utility routing into the fermentation building
  • Coordination using full 3D modeling to plan and execute system installation
  • Installation of chilled water (glycol), chilled water, condenser water, and process water systems
  • Steam and condensate systems, city water service, and compressed air distribution
  • Raw material piping and utility support for biological production processes

The job involved 4 chillers, 1 cooling tower, 2 boilers, 5 compressors, and 8 pumps — all installed, routed, and integrated by our team across multiple phases.

Client Note

Valent’s Osage facility set a high bar for precision, quality, and coordination across a multi-phase construction project. Our team delivered system-ready mechanical infrastructure in a high-complexity, fast-track schedule — supporting both startup and long-term operation of this critical production site.
